OT Field Engineer Public Sector

  • We are seeking an experienced OT Field Engineer to join a major communications remediation and telemetry upgrade programme across a national water utility network in the Greater Dublin Area. This is an exciting opportunity to work on critical infrastructure projects, modernising legacy communications systems by replacing PSTN and GSM technologies with IP-based 4G solutions and supporting the installation and commissioning of new telemetry outstations. 

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct site surveys to assess existing telemetry and communications infrastructure, including RTUs, modems, serial interfaces, power supplies, and antenna requirements.
  •  Install, configure, and commission serial-to-Ethernet converters and industrial 4G routers.
  • Configure communications equipment to integrate with legacy RTUs and coordinate networking changes with SCADA and client networking teams.
  • Perform end-to-end communications testing, including telemetry performance, alarms, polling, failover, and recovery testing.
  • Support the installation, wiring, and commissioning of IP-based telemetry outstations and Marshalling PLC panels.
  • Connect field instrumentation, install LAN cabling, and verify Modbus TCP/IP signals against approved I/O and signal lists.
  • Assist with cutover activities and safely decommission legacy telemetry equipment following client approval.
  • Produce accurate site survey reports, commissioning records, as-built documentation, and handover packs.
  • Coordinate site access with Operations and Telemetry Maintenance teams while working within Permit to Work procedures.
  • Attend programme meetings, provide progress updates, and proactively identify and escalate technical or site-related risks.

What you need:

  • Proven hands-on experience in Operational Technology (OT), industrial automation, or utilities telemetry field engineering.
  • Experience working with legacy RTU or telemetry equipment within water, wastewater, gas, electrical utilities, or other critical infrastructure environments.
  • Strong knowledge of serial communications, including RS232, RS485, modem configuration, and serial-to-Ethernet conversion.
  • Experience configuring and commissioning industrial 4G routers and communications equipment.
  • Good understanding of Modbus TCP/IP and industrial networking protocols.
  • Ability to interpret wiring schematics, cable schedules, I/O lists, and engineering drawings.
  • Experience working on live operational sites under a Permit to Work or similar safe system of work.
  • · Full clean driving license and willingness to travel across multiple sites throughout the Greater Dublin Area.
  • Full right to work in Ireland.
