Senior Data Engineer Public Sector

We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Engineer / Technical Lead to provide technical expertise and oversight for a major analytics migration programme, moving workloads from on-premises analytics platforms to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with a focus on BigQuery.

Role and Responsibilities:

Provide technical expertise and oversight across the migration of analytics workloads from on-premises platforms to GCP BigQuery.
Work closely with business teams to understand requirements and coordinate technical support throughout the migration process.
Design and implement appropriate testing and validation strategies for migrated workloads.
Create functional design specifications, technical documentation
Conduct code reviews
Mentor and coach junior team members and provide technical guidance to intermediate-level engineers.
Support Project Managers with planning, delivery, reporting and technical coordination.
Contribute to project governance, status reporting
Identify, assess and report technical risks that could impact project delivery.
Manage technical issues and risks affecting the project.
Investigate and prioritise live incidents, perform root cause analysis and recommend permanent fixes or appropriate workarounds.

What you need:

Extensive experience in Data Engineering.
Strong experience with cloud-based data technologies and/or large-scale migration of data and associated systems to the cloud.
Experience with GCP and BigQuery would be highly advantageous.
Experience using AI-assisted development tools and techniques.
Strong understanding of systems architecture and database technologies.
Experience working with relational databases such as SQL and Ingres, as well as NoSQL technologies/frameworks such as Hadoop.
Experience working with structured and semi-structured data including XML, JSON and text files.
Strong requirements gathering and Business Analysis capabilities, with the ability to translate business requirements into technical requirements.
Strong technical solution design skills and the ability to select the appropriate technologies to meet defined requirements.
