How to Get Back to Job Hunting in the New Year

Posted on 6 Jan 2026 by Ruth

So, it’s the new year, you’ve enjoyed the holidays, and now it’s time to get back to work in your job hunt.

Trying to set a routine when we come out of this weird week of eating chocolate for breakfast and wine at lunch time can be rough, but especially for those who are on the lookout for a new role, and that’s what we’re talking about today.

Change your mindset, not your CV
If nothing has changed since before Christmas, you don’t need to add to your CV. Having a new outlook on applying for roles instead. Think about last year, and what worked and didn’t work for you, what drained you and what approach brought you calls and interviews.

Reconnect
Whether you spoke to 1 really good recruiter or 50, reconnect with them! The start of January can be quiet for some agencies, so now is the time to reach out, tell them you’re still available, and get yourself back on their radars.

Make job applications part of your life, not your entire life
Incorporate job hunting into your life rather than working and searching into the night. This way, you can avoid burnout and the dread of sitting at the laptop for hours.

Expect and plan for rejection
Rejection can be a rough part of job hunting. However, if you plan for it, you won’t be as thrown off. Don’t be afraid to ask why you were not chosen for the role so you can grow, and keep in touch with the hiring manager/recruiter for future roles. Rejection isn’t a verdict of your worth as a candidate, and you can use it to learn for future interviews.

Whether you are just starting from scratch or picking up from before the holidays, start slowly and set yourself some achievable goals for January. January is more of a reset, not a deadline!
