What Makes a Candidate Memorable (In a Good Way)

Posted on 3 Mar 2026 by Ruth

Every recruiter reviews hundreds of profiles, CVs, and interviews.
Most candidates are qualified and many are experienced.
But only a few are truly memorable. And it’s rarely because of impressive job titles or perfectly designed CVs.
So, what actually makes a candidate stand out?

Clear communication and Authenticity
It’s not about saying more, it’s about saying things clearly. Candidates who are transparent about salaries, other interview processes and why they left a role/why they are leaving their current role are far more memorable than those who don’t. It also builds trust, which is important in a recruiter/candidate relationship.

Professional follow-up
A short thank-you message or thoughtful follow-up instantly sets someone apart. It shows professionalism, interest, and emotional intelligence. Whether it’s to say you are not interested in a role or to pull out of a process, it’s always good to be clear with a call or email.

Curiosity
The best candidates ask meaningful questions. Not just about salary or holidays, but about success in the role, team dynamics, and future growth. Keeping conversations moving will continue to build relationships, and indicates the kind of questions recruiters may be missing on intake calls.
